Temporary veneers: what they are, how long you wear them and how they look

Temporary veneers are resin shells worn between preparation and bonding. How long you wear them (two days at Xiluet), how they look, care rules and cost.

Short answer

Temporary veneers are thin acrylic or composite resin shells placed over prepared teeth while the porcelain is being made. They protect the teeth and let you preview the approved shape. At most clinics you wear them for one to three weeks; at Xiluet Smiles, where the lab is in the building, it is two days, Tuesday to Thursday. They are included in the price of your veneers.

What temporary veneers are, and what they are not

A temporary veneer, also called a provisional, is a thin shell of tooth-colored resin that covers a prepared tooth between the preparation visit and the day the porcelain is bonded. The two materials dentistry uses for this are acrylic (PMMA) and bis-acryl composite, which are the standard classes of provisional material for crowns and veneers alike. They are made in the chair, not in a lab: a silicone mold of your approved mock-up is filled with resin, seated over the prepared teeth, and trimmed and polished once it sets.

Temporaries do two jobs. The first is protection: a prepared surface is a little more sensitive to cold and picks up stain faster than untouched enamel, and the temporary covers it until the porcelain does. The second is rehearsal. Because ours are molded from the design you approved at Visit 1, they are a life-size preview of your final veneers that you can talk, eat and smile with before anything is fired in the lab. The procedure, step by step shows where this fits in the week.

What temporaries are not is a product you can buy on their own. The removable shells sold online as "temporary" or snap-on veneers are a different thing entirely, made to be worn over untouched teeth and taken out at night. Snap-on veneers versus porcelain veneers compares them properly; the short version is in the section near the end of this article.

How long you wear temporary veneers

As long as the lab needs. When the veneers are made by an outside laboratory, Healthline puts the usual wait at one to two weeks, and with shipping both ways, a try-in appointment and any remake, two to three weeks is common. During that time the temporaries are your front teeth, which is why most of the complaints you read about them online are about duration rather than the temporaries themselves.

At Xiluet Smiles the ceramist works one floor above the treatment rooms, so the schedule is different. Temporaries go on at the end of Visit 2 on Tuesday, the lab works on Wednesday, and they come off at Visit 3 on Thursday morning. Two days. That is short enough that most patients spend the Wednesday at the beach or in Wynwood and forget they are wearing them.

Do temporary veneers look good?

Honestly: good, not finished. Temporaries are the shape you approved, in a single shade of resin, so from a conversation away they look like a brighter, even version of your own teeth and nobody will stop you in the street. Up close, resin lacks the translucency and surface texture of layered porcelain, the color is uniform rather than graded from gum to edge, and the margins at the gum line are slightly thicker because the shell was shaped by hand in minutes. Anyone who has had a temporary crown knows the look.

That gap between temporary and final is the useful part. You are seeing the shape, length and position of your new teeth in daylight, in photos and in the mirror of your hotel bathroom, not under a dental lamp. If an edge feels too long or a corner too square, you tell your doctor on Wednesday and the ceramist adjusts the porcelain before it is finished. Because the lab is here, she can also come down and look at the temporaries in your mouth against your skin tone, which is a shade check no courier can do. Why some veneers look fake explains what she is checking for.

Patients send me a selfie in temporaries on Wednesday and ask if the final ones will look like that. Shape, yes, exactly. Color and life, no: the porcelain is a different material. The temporaries are the sketch, Thursday is the painting.

How temporary veneers feel

The first few hours are about the anesthetic wearing off, not the temporaries. After that, expect three things. Your tongue notices the new shape, and a slight lisp on s sounds is normal for a day or two until it adapts. The teeth are a little more sensitive to cold, because resin is thinner and more porous than bonded porcelain; dentists who track it put the peak at 48 to 72 hours after preparation, which with our schedule falls on the Wednesday and is gone soon after bonding. And the gum line can feel slightly full where the shell ends.

None of this should amount to pain. The Cleveland Clinic describes the same picture: some sensitivity after preparation is common and settles. If something hurts rather than feels odd, especially one tooth when you bite, that is a call to your coordinator the same day, not something to wait out. Do veneers hurt goes through each day of the week in detail.

Eating and care rules for the two days

Temporaries are held on with a weak cement on purpose, so they come off cleanly on Thursday. That means they ask for a little care. The rules are the same whether you wear them for two days or three weeks; they are just much easier to keep for two.

  • Eat soft and chew on your back teeth. Pasta, fish, eggs, rice, soups, ripe fruit. Cut food up rather than biting into it with your front teeth.
  • Skip anything hard, sticky or chewy. Nuts, crusty bread, caramel, gum and ice are the usual culprits for a temporary coming loose.
  • Mind the color. Resin stains faster than porcelain. Coffee, red wine, turmeric and tomato sauce are fine in moderation but will tint a temporary you wear for weeks; for two days it rarely matters.
  • Brush gently with a soft brush, and floss by sliding the floss out sideways rather than snapping it up, which can catch a margin.
  • Lukewarm rather than ice-cold drinks while the sensitivity peaks.
  • If a temporary comes loose, keep it and message your coordinator. Do not glue it yourself. The lab is in the building, so the fix is quick.
  • No whitening while in temporaries. The final shade was chosen at Visit 1 against your natural teeth and will not match if those change.

After bonding, the rules relax to the ones in how to take care of porcelain veneers: normal brushing and flossing, regular cleanings, and a night guard if you grind.

What temporary veneers cost

At Xiluet Smiles, nothing extra. Temporaries are part of the preparation visit, so they are inside the $1,000 price of a single porcelain veneer and inside the $5,999 Smile Design package of 20 veneers, which also includes the cleaning, X-rays, the design preview and the 5-year written warranty. There is no line on your estimate for them because there is no decision to make about them.

Elsewhere it varies. Some practices include provisionals in the per-tooth fee, others list them separately, and a remake after a lost temporary can be billed as a new visit. The question to ask any clinic is simple: is the temporary included, and what happens if it comes off while I wait? Our cost page lists every price we charge so you can compare line by line.

Temporary veneers vs snap-on veneers

The two are confused because both are thin, both are resin and both are described as temporary. Everything else differs. A temporary veneer is a stage in a dental procedure: it covers a tooth that has been prepared, it is cemented in place by a dentist, and it is replaced by porcelain within days or weeks. A snap-on veneer is a retail product: a removable shell that clips over untouched teeth, is taken out to eat and sleep, and lasts months to a few years. One is a step toward a restored tooth; the other is an accessory.

If you want to know what your smile could look like without committing to preparation, the right step is not a snap-on but the design preview at Visit 1, which is placed over your own teeth as a mock-up and removed the same day. Who is a candidate for veneers covers the health checks that come before that, and the free photo evaluation is where it starts: three photos, a written estimate within hours, and a plan that tells you which teeth would be prepared and how much.

How long do you wear temporary veneers?

As long as the lab takes to make the porcelain. With an outside laboratory that is usually one to two weeks and often closer to three with shipping and a try-in. At Xiluet Smiles the ceramist works in the building, so temporaries go on Tuesday at Visit 2 and come off Thursday at Visit 3: two days.

Do temporary veneers look good?

Good, not finished. They are the shape you approved, in a single shade of resin, so they look like an even, brighter version of your teeth from a normal distance. Up close they lack the translucency and texture of porcelain and are slightly thicker at the gum line. Think of them as a full-size preview of shape and length, not of final color.

Can you eat with temporary veneers?

Yes, carefully. Eat soft food, chew on your back teeth and cut things up rather than biting into them. Avoid hard, sticky or chewy foods such as nuts, crusty bread, caramel and gum, and keep drinks lukewarm while the cold sensitivity peaks. For two days this is easy to manage.

Dr. Marta Puentes Marrero, DMD

Do temporary veneers hurt?

They should not. What is normal is a slight lisp for a day or two, sensitivity to cold that peaks 48 to 72 hours after preparation, and a full feeling at the gum line. Pain on biting one specific tooth, or pain that starts without a trigger, is not normal and deserves a message to your coordinator the same day.

How much do temporary veneers cost?

At Xiluet Smiles they are included: in the $1,000 single veneer and in the $5,999 Smile Design package of 20 veneers. Other practices may list provisionals separately or charge for a remake after a lost temporary, so ask whether they are included and what happens if one comes off while you wait.

Dr. Marta Puentes Marrero, DMD

What if a temporary veneer falls off?

Keep it, do not glue it, and message your coordinator. Temporaries are held with a weak cement so they come off cleanly on bonding day, so one coming loose is not an emergency. Our lab is in the building, so it is re-seated quickly, and you are only in temporaries from Tuesday to Thursday.
