Short answer
A porcelain veneer is a thin ceramic shell, as thin as 0.3 mm, bonded to the front of a tooth to change its shape, length and color. Porcelain does not stain, keeps its shine and lasts 10 to 15 years or more when bonded to enamel. At Xiluet Smiles in Miami, 20 porcelain veneers are the Smile Design package: $6,999, made by a ceramist in the building, delivered in one week with a 5-year written warranty.

What a porcelain veneer actually is
A veneer covers only the front of a tooth, the part you see when you smile. It is not a cap. The back of the tooth, the biting edge and most of the enamel stay as they were. Because it is bonded rather than cemented over a stump, a veneer gets its strength from the tooth it sits on, which is why thin porcelain on sound enamel outlasts thick porcelain on a heavily cut tooth.
In Miami the word 'veneer' is used loosely. Composite veneers are resin sculpted onto the tooth in one visit, cheaper and shorter-lived. Lumineers are a brand of thin porcelain. 'No-prep' means the tooth was not reduced at all. The comparison is in composite vs porcelain vs Lumineers. This article is about porcelain, which is what we place, and what the rest of this page means by the word.
The material: porcelain over a zirconia core
Dental porcelain is a glass ceramic. It is chosen for the front teeth because it behaves like enamel under light: it is translucent at the edge, slightly opaque at the neck, and it reflects rather than absorbs, so it reads as a tooth instead of a painted surface. That is also why porcelain does not stain. Coffee, red wine and tobacco sit on the glaze and brush off, where composite absorbs them.
Our veneers are layered porcelain over a zirconia core. Zirconia is a metal-free ceramic that gives the shell its strength at 0.3 mm, so the veneer resists chipping without having to be thick. The porcelain layers on top give the color and the translucency, built up by hand so the shade is not flat. A single-shade veneer looks fake because real teeth are not one color; a layered one has depth.

Material is only half of durability. In pooled data on 6,500 veneers across 25 studies, ten-year survival was 95.5%. The failures were fractures and debonds, and both are driven more by the preparation and the bond than by the brand of porcelain. Which brings us to the millimetres.
The preparation: 0.3 mm, and why it is not a crown
To fit a veneer the dentist smooths a thin layer off the front of the tooth so the porcelain sits flush. A traditional veneer takes 0.5 to 0.7 mm. Ours take up to 0.3 mm, and on some teeth, usually small or slightly inward-set ones, nothing at all. Enamel on the front of a tooth is roughly 1 to 2 mm thick, so a 0.3 mm preparation stays inside it.
Staying in enamel matters for two reasons. The bond between porcelain and enamel is the strongest bond in dentistry; the bond to dentin, the softer layer underneath, is weaker and ages faster. A 15-year study of 672 veneers found 96.7% survival when the veneer was bonded entirely to enamel, and a failure risk about 3.5 times higher once more than 30% of the surface was dentin. And enamel has no nerve, which is why a shallow preparation is pressure rather than pain, as described in do veneers hurt.
| Xiluet 0.3 mm veneer | Traditional veneer | Crown | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tooth removed | 0 to 0.3 mm, front surface | 0.5 to 0.7 mm, front and edge | 60 to 70% of the tooth, all sides |
| Bonded to | Enamel | Mostly enamel | Dentin |
| Anaesthetic | Local, often minimal | Local | Local, deeper work |
| Right for | Healthy teeth needing color, shape, small gaps | Deeper stains, bigger shape changes | Broken, root-canalled or heavily filled teeth |
The teeth filed to pegs in the 'Turkey teeth' videos were prepared for crowns, not veneers. The difference, and the questions that reveal which one you are being sold, are in do veneers ruin your teeth.
The lab: why the ceramist decides the result
A veneer is made by a ceramist, not by the dentist. At most practices the ceramist is in another city or another country: the dentist takes an impression, ships it, and porcelain comes back two to four weeks later, made by someone who never saw your face. The shade is matched from a photo and a tab number. If it is wrong, it ships again.
Our ceramist works in the same building as the doctors. The shade is checked against your skin and eyes in person, the veneers are tried in before they are bonded, and a change on Wednesday is in the porcelain by Thursday. That is what makes the one-week timeline possible, and it is the single biggest reason a 20-veneer package can cost $6,999 here: the outside lab fee of roughly $200 to $800 per tooth is not in the price because there is no outside lab.
What porcelain veneers cost in Miami
Miami practices quote porcelain veneers at $900 to $2,500 per tooth, and 20-veneer packages between $5,000 and $10,999, as we found on local websites in October 2026. At Xiluet Smiles, 20 porcelain veneers are the Smile Design package at $6,999: exam, cleaning, X-rays, the digital design, the mock-up you approve in your mouth, the in-house lab and a 5-year written warranty included. If some teeth need crowns, the Smile Makeover covers 20 restorations for $7,999.
Your exact price is confirmed in writing within 6 hours of sending photos, and most patients finance: $6,999 over 48 months at 9% APR is about $174 a month, with five lenders that pre-qualify on a soft check. The full list is on the cost page.
Who porcelain veneers suit
- Stains whitening will not lift: tetracycline, fluorosis, a dead tooth.
- Chips and worn edges from grinding or old bonding that keeps breaking.
- Gaps of up to about 2 to 3 mm, closed in a week instead of a year of aligners.
- Small, short or mismatched front teeth, lengthened and evened in porcelain.
- Mild crowding or rotation, when a straighter look matters more than moving roots.
They do not replace a missing tooth, fix a bite or belong on inflamed gums or a tooth that is mostly filling. The full candidacy table, including recession, grinders and veneers after Invisalign, is in who is a candidate for veneers.
The week in Miami
- From home: send three photos, get your written estimate within 6 hours, reserve with a $250 deposit.
- Monday, Visit 1: exam, cleaning, X-rays, 3D scans and facial photos. The design is built and you approve it. No tooth is touched.
- Tuesday, Visit 2: the 0.3 mm preparation under local anaesthetic, then temporaries shaped like the final design.
- Thursday, Visit 3: try-in, bonding, bite check, and your 5-year warranty in writing. Fly home the same evening.
The porcelain is the easy part. What makes a veneer last is a shallow preparation on healthy enamel and a ceramist who saw your face before choosing the shade.
See finished cases on the before and after page, then send three photos through the free photo evaluation. A doctor replies within 6 hours with how many veneers your design needs, how much enamel each one would take, and a written price.

What are porcelain veneers made of?
Dental porcelain, a glass ceramic that reflects light like enamel. Ours are layered by hand over a zirconia core, a metal-free ceramic that keeps a 0.3 mm shell strong enough to resist chipping. Porcelain does not absorb stain, so coffee and wine brush off the glaze.
How much tooth is removed for a porcelain veneer?
Up to 0.3 mm from the front surface with our veneers, and sometimes none. Traditional veneers take 0.5 to 0.7 mm; a crown removes 60 to 70% of the tooth. Your doctor confirms the amount for each tooth at Visit 1, after the scans and before anything starts.
How long do porcelain veneers last?
Ten to fifteen years is typical, and pooled data on 6,500 veneers shows 95.5% still in place at ten years. Bonded entirely to enamel they do better still. Ours carry a 5-year written warranty, and a night guard is part of the plan if you grind.
Why does the lab matter so much?
Because the ceramist, not the dentist, makes the veneer. With the lab in another city, shade is matched from a photo and changes take weeks. Our ceramist works in the building, checks shade on you in person, and adjusts porcelain between visits, which is also why the package costs less.
How much do porcelain veneers cost in Miami?

Can porcelain veneers be whitened?
No. Bleaching gel works on enamel and dentin, and porcelain is sealed, so the shade you approve at the mock-up is the shade you keep. If you want your natural teeth brighter, whiten them two weeks before Visit 1 so the veneers are matched to the result.
