Zirconia vs composite veneers: what the cheap set costs

Composite is cheaper per visit, zirconia per year. Survival data, staining, Miami's full-set packages, and when composite is right.

By Dr. Marta Puentes Marrero, DMDPublished 8 min read

Short answer

Composite veneers are resin sculpted onto the tooth in one visit, $250 to $1,500 each, lasting about 5 to 7 years with polishing and repairs along the way. Zirconia veneers are lab-made ceramic, bonded at 0.3 mm and designed for 20 years. Composite wins on speed and a single tooth; zirconia wins on anything that has to last. Twenty zirconia veneers cost $6,999 at Xiluet Smiles.

Why everyone is suddenly asking about composite veneers

US search interest in composite veneers has more than doubled in the past year, from an index of about 20 last October to the 50s through most of 2026, and 'composite veneers near me' is up 450%. The driver is social media: composite bonding videos show a smile transformed in an afternoon, and the price is a fraction of porcelain. In Miami that has turned into advertised 'full set' packages of composite veneers for $3,000 to $6,999.

Some of those patients are getting exactly what they need. Many are buying a five-year product at a price that, over ten years, costs more than the ceramic they thought they could not afford. This article lays out both materials honestly, with the numbers, so you can tell which patient you are.

What each one actually is

A composite veneer is dental resin, the same family of material used for white fillings, applied directly to the front of the tooth by the dentist, sculpted by hand, hardened with a light and polished. It is done in one visit with no lab, and usually with little or no drilling. An indirect version, made in a lab from the same resin and bonded on, also exists.

A zirconia veneer is a ceramic. It is milled from a multilayer zirconia disc, hand-finished by a ceramist, then bonded to the tooth at 0.3 mm. It needs a lab, a design and two or three visits. It is also, by a wide margin, the stronger material: standard zirconia tests at roughly 1,000 to 1,200 MPa, while dental composites sit around 100 to 150 MPa. One is a reinforced plastic; the other is closer to a sapphire.

What the studies say about how long they last

Composite veneers have been studied for decades and the picture is consistent. The classic prospective study by Peumans found 89% of direct composite veneers surviving at five years; a larger retrospective series by Wolff put it at 80%. A 2023 meta-analysis of resin composite laminate veneers reported chipping and marginal discoloration as the most common complications. Survival means still in the mouth; it does not mean still looking the way it did at delivery.

Ceramic veneers are in a different league. Pooled data on 6,500 porcelain veneers put survival at 95.5% at ten years, with chipping rarer and staining essentially absent. Zirconia adds the strength margin on top, which is why we use it for full sets, crowns and patients who grind. For how zirconia compares with the other porcelain, see zirconia vs e.max.

In plain terms: expect 5 to 7 years from composite, with touch-ups along the way, and 10 to 15 years or more from ceramic. We design zirconia for 20 and warrant it for 5 in writing.

Staining, polishing and the maintenance nobody mentions

Resin is slightly porous. Coffee, tea, red wine, turmeric and smoking work into the surface, and the edge where resin meets tooth is where the discoloration shows first. Composite also loses its gloss over time, so it needs professional polishing every six to twelve months to stay presentable, and it cannot be whitened once it has yellowed. The only fix for a stained composite veneer is to replace it.

Zirconia does not stain and does not lose its gloss. Its color at year ten is its color at delivery, which is also why the edge can be finished at the gum line instead of buried under it. If you are a daily coffee drinker or a smoker, this single difference should decide the question.

Cost per year, not cost per visit

20 teethPriceExpected lifeCost per year
Composite set, Miami advertised packages$3,000 to $6,9995 to 7 years$430 to $1,400, plus polishing and repairs
Composite, one tooth at a time$250 to $1,500 per tooth5 to 7 yearsDepends on the tooth; repairs add up
Zirconia set, Xiluet Smiles$6,999Designed for 20 years, 5-year warranty$350 to $700

Composite price ranges are US averages; the Miami package range is what local clinics advertise. The composite column does not include the polishing visits, the chips patched in the chair, or the day the whole set is redone. The zirconia column is the full package: cleaning, X-rays, design preview, temporaries, delivery in one week and the warranty.

The honest reading is that a composite set only beats zirconia on cost if you replace it once and stop. Replace it twice, which is what a 5-to-7-year product means over 15 years, and it costs more than the ceramic, with more hours in the chair.

When composite is genuinely the right call

  • One chipped or worn edge. A single tooth repaired in the chair, matched to its neighbours. This is what composite is best at.
  • A small gap or an uneven edge on one or two teeth where nothing else needs to change.
  • Teeth that are still changing. We do not veneer growing mouths; for a teenager, composite that can be revised is the right material.
  • A trial of a new shape. Composite can show you longer or fuller teeth for a season before you commit to ceramic. A design mock-up at Visit 1 does the same job for free, but composite lets you wear it.
  • A genuine budget bridge while you save, with the understanding that it is the first step, not the last.

In every one of those cases the tooth underneath is left almost untouched, and switching to zirconia later is straightforward: the resin is removed, the tooth is scanned, and a 0.3 mm veneer is made. Many of our full-set patients started exactly this way.

When it is not

  • A full set. Eight to twenty teeth in resin means eight to twenty surfaces staining and chipping on their own schedules, and a set that never quite matches itself after the first repair.
  • Dark or heavily discolored teeth. Composite is translucent; to mask a dark tooth it has to be built thick, which is where the bulky, opaque look comes from. Multilayer zirconia hides the color at 0.3 mm.
  • Grinding or a heavy bite. Resin edges chip. Zirconia is the material built for that bite.
  • Coffee, wine, tea or tobacco every day. See the section above.
  • Anyone who expects it to last ten years. It is not designed to.

What 20 zirconia veneers cost at Xiluet Smiles

Smile Design is 20 zirconia veneers for $6,999: the same price as the composite sets advertised across Miami, for a material designed to last three times as long. It includes the cleaning and X-rays, the design you approve in your mouth before any tooth is touched, temporaries in the final shape, delivery in the same week, and a 5-year written warranty. Monthly plans are available through five financing partners. Prices are minimum fees, confirmed in writing after a doctor's evaluation.

If a single chipped tooth is all you need, say so when you send photos. We will quote the right repair in writing rather than a set you do not need.

I use composite every week, for the one tooth that needs it. I do not use it for twenty, because in five years I would be meeting the same patient to start again.

Related questions

Are composite veneers cheaper than zirconia in the long run?

Usually not. A composite set costs $3,000 to $6,999 in Miami and lasts 5 to 7 years, so it is replaced once or twice in the time a zirconia set lasts. Add polishing visits and repairs and the per-year cost is similar or higher. Twenty zirconia veneers are $6,999 at Xiluet Smiles.

How long do composite veneers last?

About 5 to 7 years. Studies put five-year survival of direct composite veneers between 80 and 89%, with chipping and discoloration at the edges the usual problems. Zirconia is designed for 20 years and carries a 5-year written warranty.

Dr. Marta Puentes Marrero, DMD

Do composite veneers stain?

Yes. Resin is slightly porous, so coffee, tea, wine and smoking discolor it over time, starting at the edges. It needs professional polishing every 6 to 12 months and cannot be whitened once it yellows. Zirconia does not stain.

Dr. Roger Ramos Navarro, DMD

Can composite veneers be whitened?

No. Whitening gel lightens natural enamel, not resin or ceramic. A stained composite veneer is replaced; a zirconia veneer keeps the shade it was made in.

Dr. Roger Ramos Navarro, DMD

Can I replace composite veneers with zirconia later?

Yes, and it is a common path. The resin is removed, usually leaving the enamel intact, the teeth are scanned, and 0.3 mm zirconia veneers are designed and previewed in your mouth before anything is bonded.

Dr. Marta Puentes Marrero, DMD

Does Xiluet Smiles place composite veneers?

For a single chipped or worn tooth, yes, and we quote it in writing when you send photos. Our veneer sets are zirconia: 20 veneers at 0.3 mm for $6,999, made in our own lab with a 5-year warranty.
